The project Jal Vayu Vihar by architect Shankar Kanade dates back to the nineties and serves as a landmark in the design sensitivities opted during this period. The 500 houses inside the 20 acre complex have plenty of outdoor spaces with amenities such as shopping center and multi purpose hall to encourage community interaction. Built totally in stone, the structure introduced composite walls that have no plaster. The individual homes are in the form of a cluster that open on to individual courtyards where the upper levels in each of these clusters overlook it.There is also a visual link between the multiple terraces. The cluster also permits a hierarchy of contrasting spaces that are open and covered, large and small, cool and warm, dark and light, still and motion areas. The five different patterns of designs offered for the houses bring about multiple dimensions in the exteriors that is in contrast to modern day apartment blocks.
