Traditional Kerala Architecture

Traditional Kerala architecture is characterised by many elements like the nadumuttam(courtyard), padippura (entry gate), poomukham ( informal living space outside the house), and the most recognisable pitched roof with clay tiles designed with a thattu(attic) that helps in keeping the temperatures cool inside the house. Traditionally laterite is used in construction and all the structural elements of the roof are made out of wood.
